The Making of Dr Hills’ Casebook
Dr Hills’ Casebook is a filmed adaptation of a community-theatre production, based on archival research, blending past (Victorian asylum history) and present (mental health awareness). Dr Hills Casebook is a project by UpShoot Theatre Company in partnership with Norfolk Record Office and The Restoration Trust.
The starting point was historical archives of 19th-century patients at St Andrew’s Hospital (formerly the Norfolk County Asylum). Under medical superintendent Dr William Charles Hills (1861–1887), the asylum’s records (journals, casebooks, patient data) offered insight into mental-health care in Victorian East Anglia. Working closely with the Norfolk County Archives staff, Julian developed an introductory guide that walks people through the service, sets expectations, and explains how to start uncovering stories within the archive’s rich and fascinating holdings.
